Chief Joseph commemorates one of the Northwest's greatest Nez Perce leaders. The arrowhead pattern symbolizes his courage as he led his tribe away from the US Cavalry, traveling more than 1,400 miles in severe conditions for three months. There, during the Nez Perce War of 1877, Chief Joseph was quoted as saying, "I am tired of fighting... It is cold and we have no blankets... my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever."
